La Rondine Opera
PAST PRODUCTION La rondine Giacomo Puccini Puccini’s heart-breaking story of love and loss has become enormously popular in recent years and the opera has been re-evaluated as one of the composer’s most exquisitely crafted works.
La Rondine was commissioned by the Karlstheatre, Vienna to be an operetta, but Puccini countered and delivered instead a comic opera in 1913. The event of World War 1 caused the premier to be transferred to Monte Carlo where it was initially successful, till it was denounced by the French Press as an “enemy opera“ and it closed. Puccini ° La Rondine Magda, the dazzling courtesan, finds true love with Ruggero during a magical night in Paris. Alas, the soaring music of Puccini belies the heartbreak to come. Featuring the Song of Doretta, perhaps Puccini’s most beautiful aria. La rondine, the swallow, returns to her rich protector. The opera is filled with characteristically Puccinian music, although the only well-known number is the famous Sogno di Dorabella. Angela Gheorghiu performs this beautifully right at the start of the opera.
